Advancements in Wireless Technology

Wireless technology has greatly transformed in the recent past. It has literally changed the people’s lives. Many people today cannot go through a day without using wireless devices. This up and coming means of communication has transformed the way individuals conduct our daily activities. These advancements have a huge impact on our lives, that we barely see them as wireless any more.

The greatest advantage of wireless technology such as Wi-Fi is the portability. For distance between where cables cannot work effectively, Wi-Fi can be used. In case of network failures, wireless communication can provide a backup. In addition to this, some wireless technologies have quicker response times compared to wired interfaces and communication. The number of wireless devices that still have slower responses is getting lower with each passing year. One cannot talk about wireless technologies without talking about computers and internet. Modern computer networking is based on cable-less connections. Some people may think that the cost of wireless device is a lot more than cable connections. The actual cost is a little higher than fixed connections. The cost of wireless devices and connections are going down rapidly. The increase use of the internet has also enhanced the growth of wireless technology both directly and indirectly.

There is rapid progress in wireless technology. One of the biggest advancements is the evolution from 0G to 4G. A higher version is being developed currently. 0G is the mobile radio transmitter used for tow way communication whereas 1G is the first cellular Wi-Fi that transmits data via analogue signals. 2G is basically an improved version of 1G that utilizes digital utilization concepts. They offer the same speed as 1G, but gives more sound quality to the signals. Then there was 2.5G that offered a peak speed of 172kbps. The coming of 2.5G led to the advent of services like GPRS, SMS and EDGE. 3G is the most common nowadays. It is far much better in speed and quality compared to its predecessors, and is a major leap for wireless technologies. It then evolved to 3.5G commonly known as HSPA, offering great speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps theoretically. 4G is the latest technology in the market. It uses IP to transfer data unlike 3G and 2G that used CMDA and TDMA technologies respectively. 4G also uses LTE and WiMAX technologies that are still under development. Wireless data communications are now available in new technologies like cellular data services which include EDGE,GPRS and 4G. Others include mobile satellite communication and Wi-Fi.

The main limitation of these technologies is that they are only be used in a limited area. The broadcasting of wireless signals can only be done within a limited distance. However, scientists are working on these drawbacks to remove then and add the benefits.

The wireless technology has progressed enough to bring about Wi-Fi enabled microwaves and televisions. The most recent and popular wireless technology is the Near Field Communication or NFC, which allows users to exchange data by tapping their devices together. Using these technologies is no longer expensive as they were in the last decade. With passing years, better and newer cable free technologies arrive with greater benefits.
