Are Virtual Internships helpful in the Long Run?

Virtual Classes

What exactly Is meant by a virtual internship? It means that you work as an intern from your home or place or current residence. Thus, what actually happens is that you first apply online and then appear for an online text or interview over Skype or call. Next, once you are selected, you are sent work over mail or online chats. You are also given deadlines and then you are expected to revert with the finished work by the time stated. This is what usually happens in a virtual internship. Now, a virtual internship definitely has its own set of pros as well as cons.

First, let’s have a look at the positives of virtual internships. First of all, virtual internships help you to balance work as well as other activities in life. This means that since you will be having flexible work hours, you can work for a certain part of the day and dedicate the remaining time to other passion such as dance, singing or writing. In fact, you also get free time to take up a sport of your choice. Usually what happens in a 9 to 5 job is that people miss out on their physical fitness due to lack of time management. But, that threat is totally eliminated in terms of virtual internships. Other than this, virtual internships are also great because you get to learn a lot. This may be the first time that you are actually venturing out into the world of work. So, you get to stay in the comfort of your home as well as learn work and things in your field of interest. Virtual internships allow you to take up more than one internship at the same time. This is nothing less than a brownie point if your internships are paid. It allows you to earn as well as learn more than your contemporaries. Lastly, virtual internships are a boon to those who cannot leave home because of their child or any other social barrier.

However, this does not mean that we totally ignore the negatives of virtual internships. The biggest drawback of a virtual internship is that you are unable to actually learn and experience what working in an office feels like. Work doesn’t only imply learning theoretical knowledge. It also means to learn qualities and skills such as efficient workplace communication and team work. Other than this, virtual internships are a total mess if you are a procrastinator. This is so because if you are in an office, then you are bound to be working at your desk. However, in case of virtual internships, you may get lazy and leave work pending till the last minute. Lastly, virtual internships are often less paying than full time in-house internships.

Thus, it is totally up to you to decide if a virtual internship is actually going to be helpful to you in the long run. Now that you know the pros and cons of virtual internships, I’m sure you can make a sound and informed decision for yourself.
