How to Fix an Overheating Laptop

By Shilpa | education

Does your laptop heat up so much that you start wondering if it would catch fire any moment now? Well, we may have some solutions to fix your overheating laptop.

  • The very first thing you need to find is where the heat is coming from- find out where the air vents are. You may have to clean these air vents because sometimes accumulation of dust may block the vent, restricting air flow and thus stopping the heat transfer. So look up into the laptop’s user manual and unscrew the fan doors to clean the insides using compressed air.
  • Another reason may be dried out batteries- bad batteries not only run slow, they also produce heat. So replace them.
  • Never put a laptop in a bag, unless it is switched off, hibernated or in the sleep mode.
  • Also, make sure you don’t put your laptop over a pillow or very soft mattress, or anything that blocks the air vents. Keeping a laptop is all about ventilation. Prefer keeping your laptop on a hard and straight surface while you are using it.
  • You can also invest in cooling pads- these are soft pads filled with crystals that remove heat away from the source.
  • Always keep the insides of your laptop clean. Dust under the RAM and the processor, internal hard drives. Sometimes laptops run hot even without having much data stored in the CPU, this is because of the clogged dust particles inside the laptop. Try cleaning out all these areas regularly.
  • The most common reason why your laptop heats up may be heavy load of data and files. Manage your processes better, lighten the processor’s load by changing the order of the startup processes, or install software that may help to manage clean history and cache files. You can also install software that will keep an eye on the temperature of your laptop and send necessary notifications.

Use these tips and give your overheating laptop a new cool!

Tips for Drawing Good Wiring Diagrams

By Shilpa | education , Technology

Wiring diagrams are simple visual presentations of complex physical maps representing an electrical system. Simply put, wiring diagrams show how electrical wires in a system are connected and where the power outlets and light fixtures are.

These diagrams are helpful, and even essential, when building something like a home security system or an electronic gadget. Knowing how to draw a wiring diagram the right way is therefore important if you are undertaking one of these tasks. If you are a DIYer, or new in some way to electrical design, here are several useful tips for drawing a wiring diagram:

Learn the Symbols

Wiring diagrams are visual representations. Unlike with schematics and pictorial representations, these diagrams use very abstract shapes to signify various components. They are like maps in that way. For example, a map might use a cluster of triangles to signify a mountain range. Likewise, a wiring diagram will use a single line to represent a wire. There are many symbols representing antenna, batteries, fuses inductors and so on. It’s important to know what each symbol represents. So, print out a symbols guide and familiarize yourself with each.

Use Software

Nowadays, you can easily use wire harness design software to draw a wiring diagram. Software can make it easy for you to plan out where the outlets, switches, and fixtures should be. Knowing so is important for connecting the grid. Having software can also make it easy to draw symbols and understand them. If you are a newbie, wiring software can make the process simple, fast, and convenient. You can use such software to generate diagrams, and if necessary complex schematics, in 2D or 3D.

Refer to a Circuits and Logic Template

Templates can help you understand how to create a diagram for wires and circuitry. You will be able to get a general ideal for the system you need by referring to a template. These templates might be available with the CAD electrical software you use. Some are also available online for free.

Overall, aim for clarity in your diagram. Even if your diagram is technically correct, if it’s messy and obfuscated, it can be harder to understand, even for you when referring to it later.

10 Things Every Laptop Owner Should Know

By Shilpa | education , Technology

laptop guide

In the modern technological era almost everyone owns a laptop. However, those who own it often take it for granted, considering it just another machine up for some rough use. It’s actually a completely different case. Laptops demand your care and attention as much as pets. So let us have a look at some of the things that laptop owners must know while handling their laptops in their busy lives.

1. Do not dump! Every time your computer is damaged you don’t have to dispose of the computer. Just the mechanical parts may fail, and they can be easily replaced.

2. Learn to open the flap. One should always open the laptop lid holding the center of it, or holding both the corners with each hand and lifting it up. This makes sure that there is no damage to the screen of the laptop.

3. Where to place it? Never run your laptop by keeping it on a soft surface, like a bed or worse, your lap. If the laptop isn’t supported with a hard enough surface, you might unknowingly partially or completely block the air vent required for the cooling assembly. If no air reaches the fan inside the laptop, the laptop gets extremely hot, hereby reducing the efficiency and the speed of your system. Though sitting on the couch you’re your laptop in your lap is comfortable, in the long run it’s affecting your machine and sure that isn’t at all desirable.

4. Where’s happiness? The traditional desktop computers, with their boxy shapes and all the wires sticking out of all places, are simply for those who want to change or improve/upgrade their computers. If you are someone who is quite content with the rig that your computer already possesses just get an All-in-one computer, or just a laptop that is connected to an external screen. This will keep you a lot happier than a desktop computer, trust me.

5. Keep dust at bay! The fans inside the computer and the heat sinks must be regularly cleaned of the dust that accumulates on them. You can never imagine how much dust is accumulated over them, and when you actually see it you will be shocked. Let’s make it a bit gross now. Most of that dust is you. Yes, a large part of it is your dead skin cells, transferred into it while you are busy working on the computer. Either clean it on your own in the house, or take it for servicing every six months and get it cleaned to make sure that you yourself are not responsible for your laptop getting damaged.

6. It’s not that simple. A laptop is not something simple for everyone to understand. It is one of the most intricate and complex combination of electronic devices, especially designed to do things that were once unimaginable. Never get the repair work of this delicate array of electronic devices by an amateur. Though it may cost you more, always go for professional service for no regrets later on.

7. Screen issues! You should never hit the laptop screen. Any laptop doesn’t usually respond very well to physical impacts, and you hitting it while it is operating may damage some portion of it or loosen some connection inside rendering it useless. Be careful!

8. Liquids + Laptops – A STRICT NO! Never mix liquids and laptops. They are each other’s worst enemy and no matter the amount of liquid you spill, it is enough to damage your keyboard. Some of it might even make its way to the motherboard or the hard drive, and kill the foundation of your computer altogether. Though, SSD’s can be considered as a solution, it is always advisable to keep liquids away from your laptop.

9. Want that speed? Some of you are expect a low priced rig to work at supersonic speeds; that is simply not possible! If you want a super fast laptop, open up your pockets more and pay for it. Never cut down on the specs to save a few bucks, as the results later may be highly unsatisfactory. Be realistic. Spend those extra bucks if you want a gaming laptop, or just be content with a normal one. Performance is paramount, and you would have to suit your daily job to obtain optimal performance, not test the limits of your laptop and damaging it in the process.

10. Backup does wonder! The software used for backup is really, really easy to use. Most of them run in the background, with the occasional notification, and are quite adept at backing up every single stuff that is present on your laptop. In case of a Windows laptop, you can download loads of software, but for Mac users you should go with system backup Time Machine already provided.

These simple steps can help in a great way increasing the longevity of your machine, and extracting the best out of it on a professional and personal front!

Scribd vs Playster: Which e-book Subscription is Right for You?

By Disha | education

Recent news of Oyster’s closure and the massive shakeup to Scribd’s formerly unlimited subscription model have raised one major question among e-book lovers: Which streaming service offers the most value for money without compromising on quality of titles?

Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited aside ($10 a month will give you access to a selection of Unlimited titles chosen by Amazon’s team), there are really only two options to choose from in today’s marketplace: Scribd and Playster. Which one should you try? Let’s take a closer look at each.

First up is Scribd. The service moved away from its unlimited model this past March and users have taken note. Although the fee has remained the same at $8.99, subscribers can now only enjoy three books and one audiobook of their choice per month. They also receive unlimited access to “Scribd Select" books and audiobooks, a rotating collection curated by the Scribd team.

Each additional audiobook now costs $8.99, which can translate into serious spending. It’s interesting to note that these changes were implemented as a means to discourage what the company calls “power readers". This has caused somewhat of an exodus of subscribers who loved the original version of Scribd and signed up because they wanted to be able to read with zero restrictions.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Playster whose motto – Entertainment Unlimited – remains true to this day.

Playster’s subscription costs an extremely reasonable $9.95 per month and grants users unlimited access to an ever-growing catalog of e-books and audiobooks. Rather than limiting subscribers to a small selection of titles or forcing them to choose from a handful of books per month, Playster allows book lovers to simply log in and enjoy content from the Big Five publishers without restrictions. That applies to both online streaming, and downloading books to read offline later.

What’s more, the service allows up to five simultaneous logins on almost any device, making it perfect for sharing between families and friends. There’s no need to keep tabs on who is consuming what and how much – the price won’t increase, no matter what.

Playster’s ‘Entertainment Unlimited’ model also means that those willing to pay $24.95 per month can gain access to books and audiobooks, plus enjoy unlimited music, movies and games. This eliminates the need to continuously switch between platforms, remember a bunch of login information and keep track of numerous service charges. No surprises, just entertainment unlimited – it doesn’t get much better than that!

If you’re curious about Playster, you can now try it free for 30 days by clicking here.

Have you tried Scribd or Playster (or both)? Let us know in the comments below.

What to do when T-mobile IMEI bans your LG G2 smartphone or Sony Xperia

By Osman | education

IMEI unblock LG G2 Sony Xperia Z1

When T-mobile bans your Sony Xperia Z1S LG G Flexsmart-phone for outstanding balance (and believe me they do ban it). Here is what you can do.

  • You can pay off the balance.
  • You can use some online services that offer IMEI ban unlocking so you can use your phone again. These online services often person the IMEI unblock same day online and you don’t have to send in your phone. Unlock Pros is a good example of one that does this. These online websites specialize in bad IMEI repair. I don’t know how they do it legally.
  • If it’s a stolen phone that has been IMEI blocked, it is a good idea to return it to a T-Mobile store so original owner can have it back.

AT&T, Verizon and Sprint also does banning of IMEI’s and EIN numbers.

Toronto: Within Canada’s Largest City Comes Great Fashion Design Schools

Toronto is often mistaken as Canada’s capital maybe because this capital city of Ontario has the largest population in the entire country. The city prides of a theater scene that can compete against those of New York and London.

Moreover, the city houses the Royal Ontario Museum, which is the largest in the country and its skyline also boasts of CN Tower, the world’s tallest structure. If housing the tallest and large structures is not enough, how about the city serving as hosts to topnotch American filmmakers? Toronto serves as venues of the Neilson Park Creative Center and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art.

As an additional benefit, you will realize that the city is bustling with action as most popular attractions are within walking distance. In other words, a short stride will bring you to the waterfront, thousands of hotels, sports venues, along with restaurants that serve fine cuisines, to name a few. Thus, it suffices to say that the city is one heck of a cultural center.

These things show that the city, indeed, support and celebrate the arts, which in turn provide inspiration for the creative minds.

And while referring to arts, it is inevitable that the fashion industry takes a spotlight. Arts and fashion are closely related because of the one concept and that is design. If you are creative, love the arts, and appreciate the dynamism of culture, Toronto’s fashion schools can provide you with the training for the exciting career in designing and the arts.

Why Toronto is a great place for fashion design students?

The Neilson Park Center serves as a haven to the Rugcarfters of Etobicoke, the Etobicoke Handweavers and Spinning Guild for anyone interested in textiles, especially fashion design students.

Aside from this cultural venue, there is an array of opportunities for fashion designers who do not become famous. With artistic talent and creativity, fashion designers can work in a fashion illustration or textile design, work for a garment manufacturer, or get into advertising or even retail purchasing. For business-minded individuals, they can blend their skills in fashion design with courses in business to prepare for a career in management, say fashion wholesale or retail.

The competition among retailers make the city an affordable place to shop, and this fact can be considered as a bonus for starting fashion designers. Also, designers can work their creative minds on designing labels and bottles for rums aside from apparels. This works in Toronto, too.

Now, if you have been dreaming or are already convinced of going to a fashion school in Toronto, you can make it into a reality. Check out a couple of fashion schools in Toronto that provide courses in marketing, fashion design, and merchandising:

1. International Academy of Design and Technology
The school has campuses in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Orlando. They provide program areas and a variety of degree levels designed to fit your unique career track. In detail, they offer:
• Diploma in Fashion Design
• Diploma in Merchandising and Fashion Marketing

2. Art Institute of Toronto

The school focuses on the business and creative aspects of the fashion design industry. The institute also promises that career support shall be available after finishing programs in:
• Fashion Design
• Fashion Merchandising/Marketing

The city is large so you can survey more schools. Your guts and your dreams are all that you need to do to hone your creative self in this thriving city.
