Xbox One Kinect

Xbox One Kinect capabilities review.

A feature that contends with the PlayStation Move, Microsoft’s Kinect is a motion-sensing

device originally made for the Xbox 360. It is shaped like a horizontal camera, and is used to

interact with and operate the Xbox through voice commands or gestures, without even touching

the controller.

Launched in November ’10, there was a mill of rumors being piled up about what the device is.

When it finally released, it was nothing like anything people had seen before. It came to market

way after the release of Xbox 360 and contributed to the longevity of the console

A feature that both, the new Xbox One’s Kinect and the one that its predecessor, Xbox 360, have

is the voice control feature. Users are able, through this device, to give orders to the console

using voice commands. This means saying ‘Xbox, pause’ would actually pause the game, and

commands like ‘Xbox, wake up’ would turn on the console. This was seen as an interesting

feature and was present before and is retained by the new version. Ever since it came, it also had

a motion-sensing feature which allowed the user to experience gameplay without even having to

touch the controller.

An Improved Quality

Since it was not that long ago that this device came in the market, the technology and features

are conceptually quite the same. However, the quality and performance have hit new levels. With

the old version, people had to carry out arduous efforts to get in the range of the camera and be

detected by the sensors. Furthermore, it was not possible for people of varying sizes to play the

same game because of the limits that the field of vision suffered by. This pretty much soured the

taste of experiencing such a cutting-edge technology.

However, the improved version of the device that ships with every Xbox One is in another

league, perhaps. It does not offer a significantly different features that its predecessor did not

have but its specifications allow it to deliver precision like never before, in the world of gaming.

The new version deals with the restricted field of vision by being endowed with a 1080p camera.

This extends the field of vision by 60% and detect any body motion, and even the very tall

people do not find it hard to fit into the zone. The camera is also capable of capturing video at

30 framed/s for two-way services like Skype. The motion controller is capable of handling 2

gigabits/s to read its environment.

Improved Technology

To add to its already exciting enhancements, there is still the Kinect’s tracking abilities to

consider. By checking the pigmentation in one’s face, it is able to gauge the pulse. This works

regardless of the skin complexion due to having infrared light. In contrast, the older version used

something which was more of a structured light. This allowed very low-depth and some object

could not be detected. The new version does not repeat the same mistake and offer performance

that has absolute astonishing response times. It is capable of detecting up to 6 people in one room

and can detect even the tiniest of motions, finger movements, the buttons and logos on a shirt

and just about everything, all of which without having to require specific light conditions.

The new version is not just limited to motion and voice sensing but it can also act as a TV

device of its own. Using a Microsoft’s own electronic program, you can view channels by their

names and not just numbers. This would be made possible using the HDMI port for cable TV

access. The new Kinect also requires the microphone to be on at all times, which has raised

some privacy issues. Furthermore, for Xbox One to function, it must be connected to the Kinect.

Although the features can be turned off, with Kinect being attached, not having the Kinect

connected with the console is not an option.

In a device that reads voice commands even when it is in the sleep mode and gets back up to

respond, a few hitches are equal to nothing. Microsoft has answered all prayers of people who

were lamenting the limitations the first version of Kinect came with and now the improved

version is a powerhouse to reckon with.
