Avoiding Distractions While Working

Sometimes, it’s just plain hard to be able to stay focused when you are dealing with distractions. Whether you’re finishing up your essay, doing your own work, or you just want to focus on one task, your brain wanders. You decide to watch a YouTube video, and suddenly you find yourself looking at weird websites or just browsing Facebook.

Luckily, there are ways you can keep yourself focused when you’re working. Here are a few ways.

You may think that online filters are for kidsto prevent them from accessing inappropriate websites, but they can work wonders for adults who find themselves too distracted. You can find apps like StayFocused, which block you from websites after a certain period of using them, or just prevent you from visiting them at all until you’re done.

Of course, if you’re really dedicated, you may just end up deleting the filter, but they do help you control yourself and stay focused.

Get More Sleep

If you find yourself unable to focus after pulling an all-nighter, that’s the reason. Many people don’t get enough sleep, and this can lead to a foggy and distracted mind. Sleep needs do vary, but you need around 7-8 hours of sleep each day for most people. Try getting more sleep if you haven’t done so, and your focus may improve a bit.

Take a Break

This may sound counterproductive, but when you find yourself working constantly, you may hit burnout and it can be harder for you to carry on without being distracted. Devote yourself to a break when you get a certain portion of your work done. Just make sure that break is timed so you don’t find yourself too relaxed. You can set an alarm or keep a mental note in your head. For younger readers, click here for some good ideas that you can do with your kids if you need a break.

Play Some Music

When you are having  a hard time focusing, some music may be able to help you focus. Some people love instrumental music, while others prefer white noise like the sound of rain. Some may even play some rock music and jam out while they type. Try a combination of music and see which one helps you focus more.

Try Working Outside

If you find yourself on a laptop and you can go outside, try doing that. The sunlight and the fresh air can perk you up and keep you focused. Just make sure you’re near the Internet if you need it, and make sure the weather isn’t expecting a downpour!

Mix It Up

Do you have many tasks to do? Why not mix it up? Focusing too much on one task at a time can cause burnout, but working on different tasks gives you variety and stimulates the mind. Unless one of your tasks needs to be done right away, why not mix it up and you may find yourself able to focus on all of them.
